This is the second time I've purchased an Escali XL200. The only reason I had to buy another one is because the old one got submerged in some water due to a leak in the bathroom. That scale had been accurate and consistent the 3 or 4 years that we had it. All you have to do is tap on top of the scale in order for it to calibrate, then you're good to go. Once you stand on it, your weight is displayed in 1 or 2 seconds. As the description says, the display is extra large. It's not backlit, but the LCD display is easily read in normal bathroom lighting.My late father had congestive heart failure, so it was very important that he weigh himself daily before breakfast or any drinks. His fluid intake per day was strictly limited to a specific amount, so an increase of 5lbs or more in a short amount of time meant that he was retaining fluid. I relied on this scale to know when my father would need diuretics to void any extra fluid or when to consult his physician. This scale never failed us in its consistency and accurateness. The only downside to this scale is that the platform is not flat. Towards the end, my father became less ambulatory and his ability to stand unassisted severely decreased. The surface slightly curves downward from the center, so it made standing/balancing for him a bit more difficult. If you're an individual without mobility issues, this design shouldn't be a problem.Build wise, it's made of hard plastic which is pretty sturdy. When the old one broke down, I used a 10lb sledge hammer to break it apart to better fit it in the trash. Surprisingly, the outer case just wouldn't break even after a few good hits. Someone complained in their review that the scale that they received was scratched and gouged. There is a protective film on top of the screen which may make it appear that way. The film is applied pretty well, so you have to pick at the edges to remove it. As for battery life, they don't need to be changed very often. I don't even remember when i changed the old one. It uses a pair of CR2032 lithium batteries. You can get a five pack of Energizer brand for just a few dollars on Amazon. Much cheaper than a B&M store.
